The hidden secret of politics.
The largest special interest group in america are the trial lawyers.
trial lawyers gave 236 million dollars in campaign contributions in 2008.
80% of that money went to members of the Democratic Party.
Trial lawyers, gave more campaign money, than the next 10 largest special interest groups combined.
Compare :
Big Oil - 23 million 60% republican , 40% democrat
Drug Companies - 26 million 55% republican . 45% democrat
Insurance industry - 25 million 51% democrat, 49% republican.
But you have liberals, who go oh no, the insurance industry gave republicans 12 million dollars last year.
And completely forget about the 200 million trial lawyers gave democrats.
The link below, list all major industries and how much and to who they donated campaign money to.

This is the reason Howard Dean gave when asked this question…..
“This is the answer from a doctor and a politician. Here’s why tort reform is not in the bill. When you go to pass a really enormous bill like that, the more stuff you put in it, the more enemies you make, right? And the reason that tort reform is not in the bill is because the people who wrote it did not want to take on the trial lawyers in addition to everyone else they were taking on. And that is the plain and simple truth.”
**Avatar King…….5% of 2 Trillion dollars is NOT $100 million. It is $100 BILLION .005% of 2 Trillion is $100 million. You do fuzzy math.

Just like donations from insurance companies are why republicans want tort reform.
The people actually involved, you know the victims and the doctors, are differing. Why not ask a family of 5 who just lost their dad how they feel.

The only people getting rich on medical lawsuits are lawyers. These lawsuits are forcing the high price of medical insurance. TORT REFORM is the first step to healthcare reform.

With people like that slippery skunk John Edwards as Dem. presidential candidates do you really think that’s possible?

I’m sure that could be part of it but add to that most of our representatives are lawyers themselves.

No, actually reasonable logic is the reason…by having government interfere in the due proces of the judicial system in limiting judgment awards that a victim or the family of a vicitim may be awarded (and entitled to) by a jury of their peers (or a judge if it is a bench trial) simply creates a senario where the victim becomes a victim (again) of the system and those who commit crimes are not deterred from commiting them again.
Nice try, though…I find it quite interesting that you guys want government out of everything unless, of course, it suits your selfish agenda.

No. The CBO has found that malpractice constitutes less than 2% of health care costs.
The CBO also found that states that have instituted tort reform do not have lower health care costs.
The practitioners of the ideology that focuses on punishing the victims of malpractice rather than looking at the businesses involved in health care coverage choose to ignore the facts. Alternatively they choose to use the issue of tort reform as a distraction from the very obvious and very serious problems in health care coverage in this country.

I think its the idea that we create a special class of human, one that no longer needs to take responsibility for its actions.
If a truck driver gets into a serious accident, he loses his job, a doctor cuts off the wrong foot….and nothing should happen to him?
An OB shows up drunk and fails to remove the cord around an infants neck, leaving him to grow up in a wheelchair needing 24/7 care, and his parent should have to foot the bill?
Negligence is negligence and if I can be held responsible for someone tripping on my lawn, why should a doctor belong to a different class that becomes untouchable before the bench?
Doctors pay malpractice insurance to their insurers, doctors raise their prices to their patients to cover that, the patients pay their doctors through insurance companies who will only pay the doctor the agreed on fees.
So who benefits from tort reform? Insurance companies, who don’t need to keep lawyers on staff, or worry about payouts. Who loses?
The parents, the patients, even the medical staff, because there will no longer be a reason to weed out bad doctors. Or get the troubled ones help.
That’s some reasons Democrats don’t support tort reform.
