Michelle Obama is the first African-American to ume the role of First Lady.
The wife of President Obama has said she dislikes politics, but over the course of a grueling two-year campaign she emerged as a political presence all her own. And in the early days of the Obama administration she made direct forays into the world of policy, promoting bills that support her husband’s agenda.
A Princeton graduate and Harvard-educated lawyer, Mrs. Obama is a product of Chicago’s historically black South Side, the daughter of a city pump operator. By the time she met Mr. Obama, she was one of just a handful of blacks at a prestigious law firm in the city, Sidley Austin. She founded the Chicago office of Public Allies, a nonprofit program that nurtures young leaders. Later she was vice president of community relations at the University of Chicago Medical Center; she is now on leave from her more-than-$300,000-a-year job.
Mrs. Obama was hesitant at first about her husband’s candidacy for the White House, fearing the impact on their two daughters. But after pressing advisers for a blueprint of an Obama victory, she gave her approval after seeing a concrete plan — and after insisting Mr. Obama quit smoking.
During the campaign, she spent much of her time on the trail, often away from her husband. Her nickname inside the campaign became “the closer” because she was skilled at persuading undecided voters to sign pledge cards. On the hustings, she was a passionate and commanding speaker who could connect with average voters and offer a background familiar to African-Americans, though she was sometimes criticized for being condescending.
Before moving to the White House, Mrs. Obama said that as First Lady she planned to make herself an advocate for working parents, particularly military families, and to urge better access to child care for all. Trying to juggle public duties with two young children, she would become a living illustration of the very issue she describes.
In Hyde Park, she has a reputation as a fiercely attentive mother, one who watches Malia’s footwork closely at soccer games while other parents drift and gossip over lattes. Friends say Mrs. Obama will apply the same scrutiny to her daughters’ lives in Washington.
Joining the first family in the White House is Mrs. Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, a widow and retired bank secretary who served as the girls’ chief caretaker during their mother’s time on the campaign trail.
Mrs. Obama has become known for the unusual care she takes in dressing, in both designer clothing and off the rack styles; she was enthusiastically welcomed by many designers as a new icon for American fashion. “The First Lady the world’s been waiting for,” blazed the March cover of Vogue, where Mrs. Obama appears in a fuchsia dress by Jason Wu, the young talent she helped turn into an overnight star. No First Lady since Jacqueline Kennedy has had a more instantaneous impact on fashion. Whatever Mrs. Obama wears, people notice and very often buy.
In her first weeks in the White House, Mrs. Obama was the gracious hostess and loyal spouse, welcoming visitors to the Executive Mansion and accompanying President Obama to a prayer breakfast and to a charter school to read to second graders.
In a departure from her predecessor, Mrs. Obama has also begun promoting bills that support her husband’s policy priorities. She celebrated the enacting of the pay-equity law with a White House reception for women’s rights advocates. In visits to the housing agency and Department of Education, she voiced her support for the economic stimulus bill.
Some observers have praised Mrs. Obama’s foray into the legislative debate, saying the new first lady is eminently qualified to promote the president’s policies. Others expressed surprise, saying they had expected Mrs. Obama to focus on her daughters and on the traditional issues she had emphasized in the presidential campaign, like supporting military families and working parents.
Mrs. Obama’s aides say she is still feeling her way as first lady. She is meeting regularly with her staff to plan events and hammer out her policy agenda even as she juggles play dates and goes over homework with her daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. (And yes, Mrs. Obama, like her husband, is keeping her BlackBerry.)
