Hey everyone. I’m about to be a proud father with my girlfriend. I’m 21 and she’s 22 going on 23 soon. We live in Monroe, Louisiana and it sucks. It is boring, I’ve lived here my whole life and struggle to find things to do. The town is a dead end town. If you stay here - to make a decent living you must be a doctor or lawyer. Catch my drift?
Anyways, I’ve always told myself I wouldn’t raise my child in such a dead end boring city. I want to move somewhere where there’s always things to do, great opportunities and a safe town for raising a child. Myself, have never been to Austin - but my girlfriend has. She says it’s nice there, and I believe here, not to mention I’ve heard a lot of good things about Austin from friends and family.
My question is - Is Austin, TX a good town to move to if you’re raising a family? As far as schools, jobs, and activities go.
Also, I have not graduated college yet. I’m going to finish up in a year or so in Business or Art - if that helps at all..
Austin is a great place to raise a family and there is ALWAYS something to do here. I raised my two kids in the Travis Heights area because all 3 schools (elementary, middle & high) are all within a radius of one mile and within walking distance and therefore (most importantly to me) NO busing. They are good schools and there is a year round outdoor pool in the middle of Stacy Park which is in the center of Travis Heights. My kids loved it - we loved it. It is right near the SoCo district where they have street parties on the first Thursday (?) of every month. And just down the road to good old 6th Street! Of course Austin used to be cheap but no longer because of all the transplants. I feel it is safe - I keep my windows open almost year round whether I’m here or not and back in the 70s you didn’t even have to lock your door. Traffic is horrendous at all hours of the day. It never used to be this way but now it is rush hour all the time. You learn to cope. I almost forgot to mention our lakes! We have one beautiful lake - Lake Travis - for boating, skiing, sailboarding, swimming, etc. and one so-so lake - Lake Austin. Beautiful hill country - like an Oasis in the middle of a hot dry state! All in all, you can’t beat Austin. I wish you all the best and congratulations on parenthood!!
